Digital Perm Vs. Wave Perm

Even being a licensed hairstylist, I had no idea this digital perm concept even existed until finding it on Google and asking some other hairdressers about it.

Apparently the digital perm makes it so that when you air dry your hair, your hair goes from slightly wavy to big and round. Exactly like if you were to curl your hair with a curling iron.

Only most Asian salons will perform this service. They wrap your hair in some metal perm rods and then hook up this machine to the perm rods to heat them up while apply perm solution on the rods.

A spiral perm or ordinary perm you can get at any salon is  like the photo on the right. It is wrapped with rods and then a perming solution is applied. You wait, and then rinse when it is done processing. This procedure causes your hair to have more frizz  and is more damaging than the digital perm.

But keep in mind that both perms are very damaging and not anyone can get one. If you have pre lightened hair (bleached/highlighte) you cannot receive a perm. It will overprocess your hair and  you will get breakage.

  2. I came across your blog from yahoo answers and I had an urgent question, I didn't know where to ask it so I thought I'd comment. I used the John Frieda go blonder lightening spray on my hair, I have light brown hair. It has lightened but my hair is slightly orangey and brassy i guess, I'm scared to keep spraying it because I dont want it to get more orange. Is there anything I can do to lighten it to a nice warm blonde? I can't afford to have a stylist do it.
    Thanks

  3. Hi Danielle!
The more you use that spray, the lighter your hair will get. Continue to use it until it gets light enough, and then start using a purple shampoo. There's a post about what it is and how it works on that below. :)

  4. OMG Thank you so much!
So if I continue to use it will it just get lighter but still orange? Also if I want to dye it brown later can I use a box dye or do I risk it either turning a weird color or making my hair fall out? I read some reviews about the hydrogen peroxide in the product or something burning hair when some people were getting highlights?

    Anyways thanks again!
    Also great blog!

  5. It will be orange for awhile and will slowly lighten to a bright yellow, then a regular yellow, and then pale yellow.

If you dye over it with a box, it'll be fine. But I wouldn't use bleach on it. That's probably what you heard about the hydrogen peroxide burning the hair.

  6. Hello~

I've been attempting to get a digital perm for 5 years now. I finally found someone on campus (she's Korean) who claims she can do it, but I'm a little worried that I'll just end up with a regular perm.

Is there a way to know during the process if I'm actually getting the digital perm?

    Thanks!

  7. Yes, if you're getting a digital perm, she should wrap METAL rods in your hair and then hook it up to a big machine like in the picture in this article. Also she should be places foam pieces between the rod and your head because the big machine conducts heat to the rods and will burn you if the metal rod is in contact with your scalp.

Also, if she's using plastic rods and they are very tightly wrapped and on your scalp, it is a normal perm and not a digital.

  8. Just a question, would Digiperm work on my hair even though I've tried the normal perm and it didn't work on me. Thank you in advance and good day. :)

  9. You would have to get a hair consultation done in person so they can see and feel the condition of your hair currently.

  10. Hello:

I wanted to experiment with temporary hair color sprays different colors on my never dyed hair, to see what color I would like to dye my hair for my wedding day. Would it damage my hair if I use the temporary color hairspray (Jerome Russell), and then get my hair permanently dyed 2 weeks later? I would hate to loose my hair especially because it for my wedding day.

    I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR HELP.

  11. Hi OV,
Temporary hair colors don't damage your hair at all. They sit on the hair's surface and will wash off when shampooed. :) Go ahead and use as many temporary colors as you'd like :)

    1. Hi i dyed my hair blonde a couple days ago and my roots turned out really blonde but the rest of my hair turned kind of a orange color. Ive been using shimmer lights shampoo to make it blonder. My question is how long will it take to see results after using the shampoo and if its too orange will the shampoo still work?

    2. The reason your hair turned out lighter at the roots is because the heat from your scalp caused the chemicals to react quicker. To even the color of your ends to match your roots, you'll need to lighten the ends again without applying any of the hair dye on the roots. The purple shampoo does not work well on orange hair. It's best for blondes, so I recommend lightening your hair one more time.

    1. Once you dye your hair, you cannot simply dye over it with a lighter color. Try washing your hair with a little bit of dish soap mixed in with your shampoo a couple of times to try to fade the dye a bit. Then condition really well, since dish soap is very drying.

    3. You don't have to wait at all.

    4. Are you arent you suppose to wait a few weeks?Sorry just making sure dont want to mess up my hair . How do you think my hair would look from a soft black to a medium golden brown?? thank you soo much!

    5. No, you don't have to wait. It is actually better to dye it all at once than to wait weeks apart. The same way it's better to eat all your Halloween candy in one sitting rather than 1 piece a day for a long period of time.

  13. I heard about your blog from Yahoo Answers Canada and had a hair dying emergency. I decided I was sick of the upkeep of dying my hair all the time that I would dye my hair as close as possible to my natural hair colour from a dark red to a light brown/dirty blonde. I can only use a box kit because my parents wont pay for salon and the box kit is semi permanent. It was a kit that changed dark hair to light and was obviously for light brown. My problem is the only part of my hair that dye is my roots? Why is that? And when can I dye it next? And the only way I can possibly due it next is semi permanent box dye again. Thanks!

  14. Hi Jay,

The reason your hair did not lighten is because once you dye your hair darker, you cannot use dye to then lighten. Dying your hair darker distributes dark color molecules into the hair shaft. The only way to get it out is by using a lightener, such as bleach, or a hair color stripper (which works the same way that bleach does but is slightly better for the hair). The reason your roots got lighter is because your roots are considered "virgin". They were not colored when you dyed your hair dark red. It grew after the fact that you colored your hair dark red. So, it is unaffected by dark color molecules and can be lightened with dye.

This is an unfortunate mishap that happens to a lot of people. The situation that you're in is a tough one to correct yourself. You'll need to bleach out your hair a shade lighter than what you want for the end product, and then apply the color you want over that.
